Welcome Message

A Brave New World

These are exciting times. There has been an unprecedented explosion of knowledge and innovation in the field of orthopaedic surgery resulting in an intoxicating fusion of technology and biology.

Minimally Invasive Surgery has now become an established practice in all orthopaedic subspecialties and has certainly moved by quantum leaps since arthroscopy was first introduced in 1980. These advances have included better optics, magnification, improvements in material sciences, computer guidance and now increasingly robotic assistance. Increasingly, as a result, more procedures can now be done on an outpatient basis resulting in less pain, tissue preservation, faster healing, a more rapid return to normal function and better outcomes.

Additionally, tissue engineering and work with mesenchymal stem cells have now brought us to the cusp of the elusive “Fountain of Youth”.

It is, therefore, our great pleasure to formally invite you to the 34th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association, the theme of which is, fittingly, “Frontiers in Orthopaedic Surgery”. This event will be held from the 12th - 14th October 2011 at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore and brings together many of the leaders at the cutting edge of their fields in Spine Surgery, Trauma, Paediatric Orthopaedics and Cartilage Reconstruction. Several of these experts will also be involved in the pre-meeting workshops. We have structured the programme such that there will be much interactive and thought-provoking discussion on key topics allowing for opportunities to share a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as fostering stronger relationships.

This meeting also incorporates the Inaugural ACRS (Asian Cartilage Repair Society) Congress in Singapore. In addition to Cartilage Symposia and free paper presentations, there will be a selection of papers for publication in a special edition of the Journal of Arthroscopy. This will be an invaluable and exciting opportunity for your learned colleagues and junior members to participate in the submission of cartilage papers.

I bid all our foreign guests a warm Singapore welcome. Selamat Datang. We do hope that you will find the time to let your hair down and explore some of the delights our city-state has to offer.

Thank you

A/Prof Joseph Thambiah
President, Singapore Orthopaedic Association
Chairman, Organising Committee, 34th ASM
